How Bear Lost His Tail
Long ago, Bear had a magnificent tail. It was long, thick, and soft, and Bear was very proud of it. He loved to show it off to all the animals in the forest.
Fox, who was clever but mischievous, noticed Bear's pride and decided to teach him a lesson about being too vain.
One cold winter day, Fox caught some fish from a hole in the frozen lake. Carrying the fish, he strolled past Bear, who was feeling hungry.
“Fox!” Bear called out, “Where did you get those delicious fish?”
Fox grinned slyly. “Oh, it’s easy,” he said. “I caught them with my tail! All you have to do is stick your tail into the hole in the ice, sit still, and wait. The fish will bite, and you’ll have more food than you can eat!”
Bear’s eyes lit up. “That sounds wonderful!” he said.
Fox led Bear to the lake and showed him the hole in the ice. “Now remember,” Fox said, “the longer you wait, the more fish you’ll catch. But don’t pull your tail out too soon!”
Bear, eager for a big meal, lowered his tail into the icy water and sat down. At first, the cold made him shiver, but he thought about the feast ahead and stayed put.
Fox, meanwhile, quietly slipped away, chuckling to himself. He knew that the water would freeze around Bear’s tail.
Time passed, and Bear began to feel his tail grow heavy, but he thought, This must be all the fish biting! He stayed patient, just as Fox had told him.
Finally, Bear decided it was time to pull his tail out. He yanked with all his might, but the ice had frozen solid around his tail! With one last, desperate pull, Bear managed to free himself, but his beautiful tail snapped off, leaving only a short stub behind.
Bear was heartbroken and embarrassed. He realized too late that he had been tricked because of his pride and greed.
From that day on, Bear had no long tail, and he learned to be humble.
Moral :
Don’t let pride blind you to wisdom. Be cautious of advice that sounds too good to be true. Greed and vanity can lead to unfortunate consequences.
