The Greedy Farmer and the Golden Egg
Once upon a time, in a quiet village, there lived a poor farmer named Hari. He worked hard on his small farm, but no matter how much he toiled, he barely made enough to feed his family. Every day, he wished for a miracle that would change his fortune.
One morning, while cleaning his chicken coop, Hari discovered a shiny golden egg beneath one of his hens. His eyes widened with surprise and excitement. "A golden egg! This must be a blessing from the heavens!" he exclaimed.
Hari hurried to the marketplace and sold the egg for a hefty sum of gold. For the first time in his life, he felt wealthy. With the money he earned, he bought better food for his family and some new tools for his farm.
The next day, when Hari checked the coop, he found another golden egg! He was overjoyed. Day after day, his hen laid a golden egg, and soon, he became one of the richest men in the village. People admired his newfound prosperity, and he no longer had to struggle.
However, as time passed, greed crept into Hari’s heart. "Why must I wait for just one egg every day?" he thought. "If I can get all the golden eggs at once, I will be the wealthiest man in the kingdom!"
Unable to control his greed, Hari decided to take drastic action. One morning, he took a sharp knife and killed the hen, believing he would find a large number of golden eggs inside. But as he cut it open, he was horrified to find that there were no golden eggs at all—just like any other ordinary hen.
Hari fell to his knees, realizing the grave mistake he had made. His greed had cost him the one thing that had brought him fortune. Now, with no hen to lay golden eggs, he was left with nothing. His wealth slowly diminished, and before long, he was as poor as before, perhaps even poorer.
The villagers, who once admired him, shook their heads in pity. "Greed leads to destruction," they murmured. Hari had learned his lesson the hard way. He regretted his impatience and greed, but it was too late to undo what he had done.
Moral of the Story:
Greed can lead to ruin. Patience and gratitude are the keys to lasting success.
